How to save on Energy Consumption and Water Costs

Sewing Supplies

The good news is that you can make a difference to the washing costs, financially and environmentally when washing cloth nappies by making a few changes. The only financial change you could make when using disposable nappies is to change them less frequently - and risk giving your baby nappy rash - or buy a cheaper brand which is not always the most cost effective method as you generally will need more nappies or will have more washing of clothes and bedding when they leak (on a health issue, cheaper nappies are also more likely to cause rashes).

You can save by doing any of the following (which can be applied to all household washing):

  • Make sure you wash a full load of 24 nappies each wash.
  • Use a dry bucket method of storing used nappies.
  • Line (outside) or air dry nappies and covers.
  • If buying a new machine, choose a front loading one that you can get the $150 Government rebate on.
  • Install a rainwater tank for household use - Government rebates now also apply.
  • Install a grey water system to water your garden with water from your laundry, kitchen and bathrooms.
  • Choose gas or solar hot water systems - new Government rebates also apply
